Bird song hero: A new way to ID popular birds by the songs they sing

One of the most amazing things in our great outdoors are the harmony of bird songs … each one uniquely suited to each species of bird.

While in high school, a group of friends and I took on the Envirothon, a skills-based outdoors competition covering everything from forestry to fish and soil types to song birds. Part of the testing included learning all sorts of songs and what species sing them.

There is a certain amount of satisfaction in being outdoors and knowing what sort of bird is singing based on the pitch, rhythm and cadence. Check out the video below for a neat new tutorial to learning these special melodies.
